“Can’t You Call It Something Else?"
The Reverend Annie Foerster
Unitarian Universalists are good at reframing religious concepts, calling them something else or redefining them to suit our purposes. I see nothing wrong with that. We owe it to ourselves if we develop our own theologies, to give ourselves permission to name them alongside other religions’ important concepts. Otherwise, we end up lying to ourselves or ignoring the ideas that we are uncomfortable with.

The Road Less Traveled

I believe, as Theodore Parker, 19th century Unitarian minister wrote, “Be ours a religion which, like sunshine, goes everywhere; its temple, all space; its shrine, the good heart; its creed, all truth; its ritual, works of love; its profession of faith, divine living.” I believe that this free faith, can live in all cultures, among all peoples. But here is the hidden difficulty in that idea, the sun does not shine the same in all places. Ideas, like sunshine, do not appear the same in all localities.

UUCOC Chaplain Larry Brumfield will be in the pulpit.
