Workshop Descriptions:

You can download the flyer in .PDF format to print, post, and help promote these workshops:

The OUR WHOLE LIVES (OWL) Facilitator Training workshops will ground participants in the underlying philosophy of Our Whole Lives, and train them to conduct parent orientations and lead the OWL classes for children or youth.

    • If your congregation does not currently have an OWL program, it is best to send gender-diverse teams of at least two people. If your congregation does have an established OWL program, you may send any number of prospective teachers.

    • Each level is limited to 15 participants and a minimum of 6 people must be registered for each level by one month before the training. In the very unlikely event that the minimum is not met, that level will be cancelled and participants will be refunded the registration fee.

    • Only organizations/congregations with facilitators who have completed the 25-hour Facilitator Training and are affiliated with the UUA or UCC are authorized to buy or use the visual aids for OWL Grades 7-9.

Workshop Site:

Fees include dinner Friday, 3 meals Saturday and two meals Sunday.  Ample snacks and drinks are provided throughout the training.  Please indicate dietary requirements on the registration form.

Transportation to and from the airport is the responsibility of attendees. Most of the major car rental companies have facilities at D/FW Airport and Dallas' Love Field. Please check with your hotel to determine if free shuttle service between the airport and hotel is available. It is only about about a 10-minute trip from Love Field to the church and about a 30-minute ride by taxi or Super Shuttle from D/FW Airport.

The church is in an older, upscale part of Dallas with limited street parking but lots of nearby businesses. There will be parking available at the church on Friday and Saturday; on the Sunday of training you'll be advised to carpool or park at a nearby shopping center.  Closer to the training dates we'll know what, if any, parking restrictions will be in place.

Hotel Information:

There are a wide variety of hotels within a 10-mile radius of First Unitarian Church in Dallas.  If you need suggestions or directions, please contact Lauren Daniell at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

It is recommended that you don't stay at Love Field. Recommendations do include the Best Western CityPlace on Central Expressway or the La Quinta just a few blocks from the Best Western.  Please let us know if you are interested in being put in touch with other out-of-towners so you might share accommodations and lower the cost.

We can also inquire about home hospitality if needed, but please understand the Dallas area is huge, and home hospitality might entail a 30-45 minute drive each way to/from First Church.

Financial Assistance:

Churches who are members of NTUUC may inquire about financial assistance.  Please contact the registrar for more information.

Dietary Options:

Omnivore or vegetarian meals can be specified on the registration form.

Childcare will not be available for these workshops.

Home Hospitality:

Home hospitality is limited.  Participants are encouraged to room together to cut costs.
Contact the OWL registrar to inquire: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

 Attendance Policy:

These are very intensive workshops. Please come well-rested and ready to absorb a lot in a short time. PLEASE NOTE: IT IS REQUIRED that you attend ALL three days IN THEIR ENTIRETY of the facilitator training for your level.

Sherry Kircus Photo

Sherry Kircus

Sherry Kircus is a mom, a grandmother, a counselor, a registered nurse, and a Unitarian Universalist, not necessarily in that order. She's never understood why we can talk about any other aspect of life more easily than we can about our sexuality, and she's very proud to be part of the UCC-UUA effort to help people get comfortable with being sexual creatures. Knowledge is a big part of comfort and of safety as well, so sharing knowledge about sexuality is a vital work. Sherry agrees that what we're doing with Our Whole Lives is salvation. What could possibly be more important?

Sherry has a couple of degrees in education, one in nursing, and a master's in Counseling Psychology. She is currently working toward a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy while working 30 hours a week as a counselor. It would seem she likes going to school and she likes working with people. Meanwhile, she loves Our Whole Lives and is looking forward to sharing the K-1, 4-6 portion of the program with folks in Dallas in July.

Steve Caldwell Photo

Steve Caldwell

Steve Caldwell is an Our Whole Lives (OWL) trainer for the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) with experience in OWL at all age/grade levels in both Unitarian Universalist and United Church of Christ settings. He has been involved in the OWL program as a trainer and educator since 1999 at his Shreveport congregation, within the Southern Region, and throughout the UUA.

Steve has also provided OWL sexuality education training for the entire clinic and community center staff of Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas. Steve's social justice work includes work with Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in Shreveport and NW Louisiana.

Steve has called Shreveport, Louisiana his home since 1995 and was active in the Rapid City, South Dakota UU congregation from 1992-1995. He actively supports religious education and youth ministry at All Souls UU Church in Shreveport and also in the Southwest District. He has worked in UU young adult and campus ministry during his term on the UU Campus Ministry Advisory Committee from 2002 to 2003. Steve shares his home life with his partner Susan, son Charlie (when he's not at LSU), one cat named Dakota, and is providing a temporary home for a cat named Sassy (who belongs to Steve's daughter Delia who has moved into her own home).

Jennifer Nichols Photo

Jennifer Nichols

Jennifer Nichols has 19 years experience as a religious educator with 18 years as a sexuality educator. She brought Our Whole Lives to First Jefferson and then the Southwestern Conference to ensure that her own children would have quality sexuality education, as well as to spread OWL's life-enriching, life-saving knowledge to as many as possible.

Years later, all three of her girls have taken all levels of OWL and are well-adjusted, healthy young women. Jennifer continues her crusade to bring sexuality education to as many communities as she can as a trainer.

Judith Galas

Judith Galas has been an "OWL warrior" since 2007, when she took her first OWL workshop so she could facilitate kindergarten OWL at her home church, Plymouth Congregational UCC in Lawrence, Kan. Since then she has trained and taught in all the OWL levels, and has facilitated the junior high and senior high classes in both a church and a school setting.

Judith trains facilitators at the elementary, junior/senior, and young adult/adult levels. She loves the opportunity to help others spread the word about the OWL program and to make a difference in young people's lives. Retired from full-time teaching at a junior high, she loves to quilt, write, and chase after her dog, Amazing Grace.
